End-grain walnut and horse chestnut board
End grain means the end of the wood faces up. With dark walnut against pale horse chestnut, that gives you the checkerboard. I carved it into an irregular shape with curved, bevelled edges, and routed 2 handles into the underside.

Living with it
Rinse it, wipe it with a sponge, dry off the water, then let it air dry standing on its feet. Don't leave it soaking or in direct sun: wood is still alive and can warp.
If it starts to look dull, rub in a little of any food-safe oil you have (olive, sunflower) with a lint-free cloth. Sticky means too much oil. Wipe the extra off with kitchen towel.
End grain needs a bit more care, as it's more prone to bending. Dry it off properly, and store it flat on its feet or standing upright, not leaning at an angle.
